Maverick,

Intel made the stupid mistake of making an enemy out of Sun with IA-64. It sent 2 bad messages to the industry:
1. Sun is the leader in the server space and Intel is not getting that business. Compaq and IBM support will always be lukewarm due to Alpha and PowerPC. So, what kind of volumes can Intel muster anyway? why should anyone else support IA-64?
2. Why is Intel calling Sun an enemy? Is intel in the systems business? If so, why the heck should any OEM get IA-64 from Intel? To become an Intel distributor? How do they win that game against Dell?

IA-64 story got progressively worse over the last year and now the ball is in AMD's court. AMD can earn its stripes by executing well on the Hammer project and getting Sun and the industry behind AA64 (x86-64). This is a long term story though and Hammer slipping into 2002 made things a bit tougher for AMD.

Chuck
