Re: So moving from AMD/K-6 to 64-bit Itanium makes sense? Sticking with Intel makes sense? Sun will move to US-III, as soon as it makes sense, i.e. for the next version after the K-6 runs out.

Prognosticator,

AMD is not taking orders for the K6-2 after Oct 1st. This doesn't provide enough time to go to any other chip except Pentium or Athlon (for now).

The logistics for the low end won't allow the US III to compete. Sun can spread R&D costs over a few hundred thousand chips per quarter, AMD or INTC can spread it over millions of chips per quarter. A top end chip can be had for under $1000 with chipset. The only way Sun could enter that market with the Ultra Sparc would be to sell at a loss.

I think Sun just may not be revealing all of its cards yet. Why should they let the competition know what they plan to do? Say the safe thing that may eventually go to Sparc, but that doesn't mean that's what's going on in the back room.

Yes you do. You've not had a lot of good things to say about them

Sun's comments about AMD are starting to make me think they may be smarter than I had assumed. IF this is followed up by ***ACTION*** I will definately reconsider my opinions.
