Another reason for the wild swings is the unusual situation of the carriers. They have to do way more capital spending than their current earnings would justify in a business that basically remains the same. So the analysts groan and spread predictions of doom. On the other hand, the huge capital expenditures are absolutely necessary for the survival of the same carriers, and this is a point that the analysts, being conventional people, exposed to an unusual situation, fail to see. Hence talk of a slow down in the building of the internet infrastructure. The scene isn't familiar to anyone.
