Dear Hmaly:

Not by my home. There are 30 to 40 long freights plus 8 amtrak passenger trains daily on the track which is 250 meters to the south. The average speeds of freight are 50 to 70 MPH, intermodal average 60 to 80 MPH, and passenger about the same. Wisconsin Central is expanding their trackage all the time. Service and dependability sells very well indeed.

The property was given to build the railroads and the break is no longer given (where were you for last few decades?). The cost of maintaining the tracks far exceeds any property tax subsidy. And fuel taxes do not pay all of the costs of maintenance of the interstates, local roads, etc.

If truckers would have to pay at the rate they destroy the roads (a truck damages a road equivalent to 40 cars (or more)), trucking fuel would cost about $4.00 a gallon more than it does now. Cars are subsidizing heavy trucks big time. If truckers had to charge $1.00 a mile per load more (basically doubling per mile rates now), trains would be the standard way of going intercity for freight.

Pete
