Scumbria,

You may remember that there were a few minor issues relating to DRDRAM and the introduction of the i820 chipset.

All of these have of course been worked out, and i820 systems now optimize high cost with low performance.

The problems with the 820 were identified before the launch. Intel delayed the launch of the 820 because of these problems. No products were ever shipped to customers until the problems were solved (by going to two RIMM slots).

OTOH, you've described a scenario previously where it's actually okay to put products in customers hands that may have incompatibility problems. "No problem, they can work around them. We'll just publish a list [which they may or may not ever get a chance to see] of which pieces work with which other pieces." Does that sound like a way to engender customer loyalty and respect?

Do you really believe the Via chips are completely tested? Even well tested? With all possible combinations of products? Do you think that all of this testing will be completed before products start shipping to customers? Who do I talk to if I find incompatible products? Is Via going to claim it's Samsung's problem? Is Samsung going to claim it's IWill's problem? Who controls the "standard" and referees which products are in-spec and which are out-of-spec? Is this a repeat of PC100?

Sounds like a great formula for success. I especially like the part where customers potentially get to help debug the technology.

Dave
