NEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) - The number of U.S. households with digital devices with Internet access other than personal computers increased 12 percent from April to July 2000, according research firm Media Metrix <MMXI.O>.

These devices include wireless phones and handheld personal digital assistants such as the popular Palm Pilot.

As of July 2000, 7.4 million U.S. households owned such devices, up 12 percent from 6.6 million households in April 2000. This represents 48 percent annualised growth.

"Almost 1.4 million, or about 20 percent of the households who own these devices, do not own a PC," Media Metrix analyst Bruce Ryon said.

"Moreover, between April and June 2000, ownership of these non-PC devices grew twice as fast among households without PCs than households with PCs.

The largest growth in non-PC households is in wireless phones, he added.
