<What standards of conduct, knowledge are we emphazing on teachers?? The NEA has been a very powerful force in preventing merit pay for teachers, as I recall.>

You need a master's degree in the subject you teach for Permanent Certification. That's why NY is importing Math and Science Teachers. Hardly anyone with a MA in Math or Science goes into teaching.

The teaching profession here has gone the way of the gold market. I'm not kidding you. There is very little interest. Young kids out of college teach for a year or two till they get their master's degree and land a better job. Teaching is primarily viewed as a great alternative to welfare or unemployment.

The Reality is that there is very few good teachers around to implement those standards. Teaching is dying as a profession around here. And all the bureaucrats do is talk about standards.

Go enact and implement your standards and teach.
