Sony Launches First MiniDisc Walkman Player/Recorder With Digital PCLink
PARK RIDGE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 2000--To meet the demands of the more than 20 million Americans currently downloading music from the Internet, Sony Electronics today announced the first portable MiniDisc player/recorder with Digital PCLink.

The new MZ-R70DPC MD model enables consumers to record personalized music mixes with superb sound by taking the audio information out of the ``noisy'' PC environment and converting it to a digital signal, as it is transferred to the recorder.

With this latest version of the MD Walkman®, the consumer receives all the benefits associated with true digital-to-digital recording, such as near CD quality sound, automatic synchronized recording and automatic track mark insertion. The automatic synchronized recording function allows the user to create a personalized MD that sounds professionally mixed.

It eliminates blank spaces at the beginning and end of a song by automatically detecting the digital signal once ``play'' is pressed on the computer play list. The MZ-R70DPC also has automatic track mark insertion, which places track marks between play list songs on the disc during recording, dividing audio content into separate sections of data or tracks.

``With the Internet download market expected to grow to more than $5.4 billion by 2005, we anticipate that more people will want to take their downloaded music with them,'' said Tracy Farrington, marketing manager for portable MiniDisc players at Sony Electronics. ``The MZ-R70DPC lets you create a portable, cost effective, digital-quality catalog of your Internet music files on MiniDiscs instead of taking up valuable PC hard drive space - all for about 12 cents a song.''

Mix Music From Almost Any Source Using Your Preferred Jukebox Software

The MZ-R70DPC works with any audio player/jukebox application, eliminating the need to install additional software. The included plug-and-play USB interface, called the MiniDisc Digital PCLink, automatically configures itself when connected to a Windows® 98/2000 enabled PC.

To make a mix, users simply rip tracks from their CDs or download Internet music files into their preferred jukebox application, create a play list, and the MD Walkman player makes a seamlessly recorded, digital mix. Tracks can also be added from legacy music collections, such as records and tapes.

Transportable

The MZ-R70DPC is compact and lightweight. At a mere four ounces (without battery), it is small enough to take anywhere. Personalized mixes can be enjoyed at the gym, on a train, plane or just walking around town. In addition, the new pocket-sized MD Walkman player features a dual headphone jack for sharing music and a ``smart'' remote with editing functions. An optional car adapter allows consumers to plug the unit into a car stereo system.

The new MD Walkman player/recorder features a digital Mega Bass® sound system and a 40-second shock-resistant memory. It delivers up to 17 hours of continuous playback on a single AA battery or consumers can use the included rechargeable AA battery.

The MZ-R70DPC MD Walkman player digital PC bundle comes supplied with everything needed to digitally record Internet music files, including a USB cable, digital PCLink and an optical cable. An AC power adapter and carrying pouch are also supplied.

The new bundle will be available in October and is expected to sell for about $300. MiniDisc media is priced at about $2 to $3 per disc, is re-recordable and delivers up to 80 minutes of digital playback, on a single disc.
