If you are building a network of the future, and your techs tell you this or that equipment is the coming state of the art, and you know that there will be a host of other companies trying to eat your lunch; then why isn't it good business to buy a piece of that company producing the equipment? Especially, if you can do it at pre-ipo prices? The downside would be that you haven't identified the equipment that will do the best job, but if you have, by being an early adopter and investor, you will be the preferred head of the line customer for awhile and make a helluva return on your investment.
