SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Silicon Storage Technology Inc. here said it will provide flash memory technology to Qualcomm Inc. (San Diego) for use in chip sets that target new wireless phone applications using code-division multiple-access (CDMA).
SST said its SuperFlash technology was selected by Qualcomm because of its advantages in supporting low-power consumption, the ability to shrink feature sizes with new processes and its availability from multiple silicon foundries.
"We see a growing need for nonvolatile memory solutions that are simple to integrate into wireless communication devices," said Don Schrock, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, the chip-set division of the wireless systems supplier. He said SST's SuperFlash matches the performance and compatibility requirements in Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) solutions.
SST's SuperFlash technology is a NOR type, split-gate cell architecture that uses a thick-oxide process with fewer fabrication steps than other flash memory designs, according to the company. SST said its design results in a low-cost, nonvolatile memory solution with superior data retention capabilities and higher reliability. The technology has been licensed to Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing, IBM, Motorola, Samsung, Sanyo, Seiko Epson, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. |
