Scumbria, <Old RIMMS have 16 banks. New RIMMS have 16 banks. Memory controllers only keep 4 banks open. Something doesn't add up here.>
Old RIMMs actually have 64, 128, or 256 banks on it, depending on whether there are four, eight, or sixteen devices on the RIMM. Unfortunately, the memory controller won't keep more than a handful of those banks open.
The new RIMMs will have 16, 32, or 64 banks on it, once again depending on how many devices are on the RIMM. This time, however, the memory controller may be able to keep all the banks open, if the power juggling is no longer necessary.
So you see, ironically the reduction in banks could actually lead to more banks able to be open at once. Does it add up now?
