CDMA in China to be discussed in Oct.
Chinese adoption of the CDMA (code division multiple access) technology standard is to be discussed next month during Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji's state visit here.
China Unicom President Yang Xianzu, who has been in Korea since last Sunday, is said to have told Information and Communication Minister Ahn Byung-yub yesterday that the question of the Chinese deploying CDMA technology could be settled by Zhu during a summit meeting with President Kim Dae-jung. Zhu is to arrive Oct.17 to attend the ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Summit that will be held Oct.20-21.
"When Ahn expressed the wish that China adopt CDMA technology, Yang did not give a definite answer, pointing out, instead, some of the technological advantages of CDMA," said Lee Kun-soo, Dongah Elecomm Corp. CEO, who was present during the meeting.
Yang went on to say that the issue of Chinese adoption of CDMA technology could be settled between Kim and Zhu during the upcoming summit meeting. In fact, the subject is part of the official agenda, according to Lee.
"China is likely to adopt 2G (second generation mobile telecommunications) CDMA technology for now, with 3G deployment expected in 2005," said Lee.
