You've got to look deeper than those "mere" statistics. You have to look at the politics of the times, and the popular vehicles of the day.

In 1973 politicians had clear warnings of what subsequently was to transpired in the Middle East, along with short inventories, etc., etc. And this was hand in glove with folks then love affair with all things BIG as it related to transportation. Cadillacs, Chevy's, station wagons, big block, huge horsepower engines, etc., etc.

Today is much the same. Politicians have seen this coming for months. And need I point out our country's current love affair with all things BIG a la SUV style? Once again we pursue a policy, and conduct our lives in a fashion, that seems to indicate we feel there's an unlimited supply of easy oil in the ground, and that the "dealers" will always bend over backwards to give it to us.

Yup....the more things change.....the more they stay the same. ;-)
