The Company attempted to distribute the cartridges for the new Enfield rifle which were lubricated with grease. Rumors ran riot, and many of the Muslim troops refused the cartridges because of the lard (pig fat)and many of the Hindu troops refused the cartridge because of the tallow (beef fat). The British attempted to suppress and punish the mutinous troops some of whom rose and killed their (English) officers at Meerut May 10, 1857. In several cities especially Cawnpore, the rebellious troops beseiged and sometimes murdered the officers and their families. The mutinous troops attempted to restore the Mogul Emperor, and the British led "loyal" and English troops to relieve the besieged groups. The British retaliated brutally. The British transferred control from the East India Company to the British government.
