QCOM--Kyocera Wireless In License Pact For
PalmOS Platform
Dow Jones Newswires

SAN DIEGO -- Kyocera Corp.'s (KYO) Kyocera Wireless unit signed a
licensing pact for Palm Inc.'s (PALM) operating system.

Kyocera will use the platform as the foundation for a new line of wireless
communications products it plans to unveil by the end of 2000.

In a press release Wednesday, Kyocera said it plans to develop a line of
'smartphone' handsets incorporating the Palm operating system software
and bearing the Palm Powered brand marker.

In February 2000, Kyocera purchased Qualcomm Inc.'s (QCOM)
terrestrial CDMA, or code division multiple access, handset business,
including the pdQ smartphone and the thin phone series of CDMA digital
wireless phones.

The pact between Palm and Kyocera represents a transfer of the original
Qualcomm license to Kyocera Wireless Corp.

For Palm, the agreement further extends the Palm platform into the wireless
communications market.

Kyocera Wireless' parent Kyocera Corp. posted sales of $7.9 billion for
the fiscal year ended March 31.
