That's fascinating... I'd always thought that he wanted to go back to the teachings of the early church and was mostly protesting church excesses. In 1510 he apparently visited the Vatican on business of his order. It was then that he discovered the difference between his brand and that of the heads of the Church.

In one of my searches on Luther I came across a serious academic reference written in the 60's that suggested the "95 Theses" weren't actually posted but only existed as a intellectual debate (although a contentious one) and that a heroic and defiant posting by him on the doors of Wittenberg castle church in the face of opposition is apocryphal. I've lost the link, unfortunately.
