Re: How come no AMD vs. Intel update today
Here's an update. If you go to Gateway's site and configure identical (to the degree possible) 800MHZ Small Business PC's with Athlon and Pentium III, the Athlon system is $59 more expensive. Same monitor, hard drive, memory, software, etc. Given that the PIII has integrated graphics while the Athlon has a (higher performing) discrete video card and a case and motherboard that cost about $25 more, it would appear that OEMs are paying pretty much the same price for PIII and Athlon at 800MHZ - maybe $10 less for the Athlon. From pricewatch, it appears that Intel is still getting $60 more for its 800MHZ parts, but, considering that most of Intel's sales are to OEMs and discounted (relative to AMD's sales mix) that's probably not the case.
If AMD is getting ASPs very similar to Intel's, and AMD's plan for making billions involves ASPs a little over $100 for the next few quarters, what will happen to Intel's business plan that relies upon ASPs close to $200?
Intel is getting some volume at 900MHZ and 1GHZ, but AMD is rolling out volume at 1GHZ, 1.1GHZ, and 1.2GHZ. AMD will match Intel P4 volume with 1.3GHZ and possibly 1.4GHZ.
For the most part, it's going to be .9 and 1 from Intel against 1, 1.1, and 1.2 from AMD. All the 1.4GHZ talk is going to make anything less than 1GHZ unable to command a price over $100.
Q3 and Q4 are just about here. Do you know where your ASPs are?
