Spreads are not a bad way to trade depending on how you set them up, however I have stepped on my own toes using them in the past. As an example, I bought a call on coffee awhile back for about $800. When the market went my direction, I sold a call with a higher strike to someone else. I ended up making about $1800 on the trade but would have made over $10000 if I hadn't sold to create the free trade.

I think the getting out part has to be tackled using a target price with a close eye on what's going on with whatever market you're trading.
