The dictionary (and IMO, common usage) doesn't really support a large distinction between illusion and delusion. There is considerable overlap and I think both mass-delusion and mass-illusion are possible. In Hermetic belief the power of the mind to create reality has to balance one's desires against those of others. The more invisible your desire is to them, the more it can happen. I believe a lot of ecstatic religious experience is delusional, but how do I know? If I wanted to create a reality where gold coins fall from heaven I'd have to compete with the people who say this can't be happening. In an ecstatic religious ritual I'm given permission by the group to talk in tongues or flip around like a trout out of water, filled with the Holy Spirit.

How much credence I give to this, even I'm not sure! I've posited elsewhere that if an act or object can not be distinguished from another by any external test they are the same. Like Einstein's acceleration test. Gravity = acceleration. All experiments work the same no matter what the source of acceleration therefore they MUST be the same.

So if an illusion is so complete that it resembles the real thing in every way, is it not what it purports to be? So, using my definition maybe Satan did exist for Luther. He doesn't for me. I've seen no effects from his presence, nor do I know anyone who has. The causation of everything I see can be explained by people or by natural processes. Even the "supernatural" is allowed in my metaphysics, though at a relatively low level of incidence. The number of people that have 1st-hand experience with ET is about what I would expect. I don't know anyone who has and I don't know anyone who knows someone who has. So at least two degrees of separation exist between me and the tangible reality of ET. I wouldn't rely upon them to put groceries in my 'fridge, nor would I completely deny their existence.
