Movicom BellSouth to Deploy Alcatel's Multiservice Broadband Solution in Uruguay

BusinessWire, 09/21/2000 16:19

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 2000--

Another major Latin American service provider chooses Alcatel,

strengthening the company's presence in an explosive marketplace

Alcatel (Paris:CGEP.PA and NYSE:ALA) today announced that Uruguay's Movicom BellSouth has signed a multi-million contract to deploy the Alcatel LMDS (local multipoint distribution service) solution, multiservice platform, and network and service management. Movicom's choice in Uruguay follows a similar choice by Movicom BellSouth in Argentina, which selected Alcatel's multiservice broadband platform in September 1999.

The Alcatel LMDS solution is a point-to-multipoint broadband wireless network operating in the high-frequency millimeterwave bands above 20 GHz. The solution enables Movicom BellSouth to quickly introduce high speed data and Internet services to its customers in the capital city of Montevideo and along Uruguay's coastal corridor. These customers include financial institutions, government agencies, utility companies and other large corporations.

The multiservice platform, based on the Alcatel 7470 Multiservice Platform (formerly the MainStreetXpress 36170) is an ideal, highly flexible solution for multiprotocol networks that support a variety of services for transport across a broadband infrastructure. The Alcatel 5620 Network Manager (formerly the MainStreetXpress 46020), enables seamless, end-to-end management of the network and service delivery.

Broadband wireless enables Movicom BellSouth to expand its operations and aggressively compete in the Uruguayan data market. The contract was awarded to Tecnocom, an Alcatel subsidiary that provides network design and support services to Uruguay's service providers. Several LMDS base stations have already been deployed in Montevideo. Service will be extended to other areas of the country according to market needs.

"The data market is set to explode in Latin America, and broadband wireless enables Movicom BellSouth to succeed in this new market," said Diego Roel, Movicom BellSouth's data manager. "Alcatel's solution allows us to build up our network incrementally, delivering 'just in time' service and reducing our initial capital expenditure and operating costs."

"This is the second time a BellSouth affiliate has chosen Alcatel's products for its broadband platform, reinforcing our leading role in LMDS," said Jean-David Calvet, executive vice-president, Fixed Wireless, Alcatel. "With more than 3000 base station sector installations for more than 100 customers worldwide, we continue to set the pace in the broadband wireless industry."

About Alcatel LMDS

The comprehensive Alcatel LMDS solution is a multiservice broadband wireless network comprised of base station and customer premises equipment, and network and service management. A base station, consisting of digital modulation equipment with optional switching capabilities and point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location that collects all traffic to and from customers within a given wireless coverage area. The base station is also the linking point between the customer and the network backbone. Customer premises equipment includes radio termination (RT) transceivers and network termination (NT) units, which support a full range of services. The network and service management suite supports complete end-to-end management of both the wireless and wireline portions of the network, providing a full range of VPN capabilities, billing and performance information, statistics and maintenance support.
