Sony Recruits Top Hitachi Engineer To Lead Chip Development

Friday, September 22, 2000

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sony Corp. (6758) has recruited a top Hitachi Ltd. (6501) engineer, who has been a major player in various government-private chip development projects, to lead its semiconductor development.

Tsugio Makimoto, a former senior managing director of semiconductor operations and currently the lead engineer at Hitachi, will join Sony on Oct. 1.

Makimoto has been the driving force behind a number of joint semiconductor development projects between the government and industry, and is a well-known figure in the Japanese semiconductor industry.

Sony is bringing Makimoto on board to formulate a semiconductor development strategy and provide technical guidance, and expects that his extensive connections and rich experience will help strengthen its semiconductor operations.

Sony Chairman Nobuyuki Idei contacted Hitachi President Etsuhiko Shoyama directly in early August with his plans regarding Makimoto.
