Litho suppliers scramble in Taiwan as UMC prepares huge 300-mm order

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Major lithography vendors are bidding for the first round of 300-mm equipment orders in Taiwan, including a heated competition reportedly worth up to $720 million at silicon-foundry giant United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC).

But leading lithography vendors face some major challenges to ship their products for both the 200- and 300-mm wafer fabs in Taiwan, as suppliers claim they are sold out of leading-edge exposure tools for the foreseeable future.

But still, lithography suppliers are scrambling to get business in Taiwan--and for good reason. For example, ASM Lithography of the Netherlands and Nikon Corp. of Japan are reportedly the two leading vendors battling for a stepper order worth up to $360 million in UMC's new 300-mm wafer fab in Tainan, said sources at last week's Semicon Taiwan trade show here.
