| We may lose, who knows yet, but the rest is nonsense. The claim to be speaking for the "common man and woman" is preposterous. If only men voted, Bush would almost certainly win. If only whites voted, Bush would almost certainly win. If blacks, most of whom are evangelicals, by the way, were to vote their core convictions on social issues, Bush would win. If only married people voted, Bush would win. In fact, the dirty little secret of the Democratic Party is that if the black vote were not so overwhelmingly Democratic, they would likely not see the inside of the White House for the next 50 years. (And even so, Clinton could not manage a majority, but needed Perot to draw away Republican leaning independents). It is because they know the Democratic Party cannot win without them that black leaders are wroth with Gore for selecting Lieberman to make history with. And if blacks sit on their hands in this election, Gore is doomed. Without demonizing Republicans, the Democrats are on shaky ground in mobilizing their patchwork of constituencies....... |
