I do think that the people in charge of the convention realize that they have a serious demographics problem, and need to attract voters outside of the current base if they are to remain electorally competitive. But it will take more than allowing multi-colored faces to speak at the convention to convince the populace of the sincerity of the party as a whole. There is generally perceived, and frequently historically justified, view that the GOP is unsympathetic to those less fortunate, and especially those who are Black, those who are gay, those who are Hispanic, those who are ... hyphenated-Americans in some way. As you say, Newt spoke to this (and I have previously stated that I thought Newt could be a very thoughtful), but this has not been taken into the "soul" of the party.
