SAN JOSE, Calif., Sep 22, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Top 12 Silicon Valley Fast 50 Companies' Five-Year Growth Rates Exceed
10,000 Percent, with Yahoo! Growing 43,085 Percent

Yahoo! Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif. ranked number one on the Sixth Annual Silicon
Valley Technology Fast 50, a ranking of the fastest growing technology companies
in the Silicon Valley by Deloitte & Touche's Technology & Communications Group.

Yahoo!'s revenues grew from $1,363,000 in 1995 to $588,608,000 in 1999,
resulting in five-year revenue growth of 43,085 percent. This is the first time
that an Internet company has topped the Silicon Valley Technology Fast 50.

growth in a number of key areas, including global expansion, enabling
transactions, business and enterprise services, rich media and wireless, and we

Second on the Fast 50 is PCTEL Inc., a communications/networking company based
in Milpitas, Calif., with 39,844 percent revenue growth, up from $191,000 in
1995 to $76,293,000 in 1999. Founded in 1994, PCTEL develops and sells Internet
connectivity solutions and has more than 30 patents in analog and broadband
technology.

Third-ranked NVIDIA Corp., a semiconductor/equipment company based in Santa
Clara, showed revenue growth of 31,584 percent, soaring from $1,182,000 in 1995
to $374,505,000 in 1999. NVIDIA Corp. is the fastest growing graphics company in
the world and one of the fastest growing semiconductor companies in history.

It was the first to develop architecturally compatible 3D graphics processors
that are now used in commercial workstations and consumer PCs.

Fourth-ranked ArthroCare Corp., a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based
medical/scientific/technical company, had a growth rate of 22,250 percent,
moving from $218,000 in 1995 to $48,724,000 in 1999. ArthroCare is the creator
of Arthroscopy, a patented medical technology that uses radio frequency energy
to perform surgery on soft tissue. It markets more than 40 disposable surgical
devices for soft tissue surgery.

Mountain View, Calif.-based VeriSign Inc. is ranked number five with 22,093
percent growth, with revenue of $382,000 in 1995 growing to $84,776,000 in 1999.
VeriSign is a software company and the leading provider of digital name,
certificate and payment services. It has issued more than 215,000 digital
certificates for Web sites and more than 3.9 million digital certificates for
individuals.

VERITAS Software Ranks on Fast 50 for Sixth Consecutive Year

Number 28-ranked VERITAS Software, based in Mountain View, is the only company
to have ranked on the Silicon Valley Technology Fast 50 for each of the six
years since the program's inception. Its revenues increased 2,375 percent,
growing from $24,087,000 in 1995 topping $596,112,000 in 1999.

In addition, 22 percent of the 2000 winners are appearing on the list for the
second year in a row, 14 percent appear for the third time and 4 percent
celebrate their fourth win. Fifty-eight percent (29 companies) of the 2000
winners appear on the list for the first time.


Average Growth for Silicon Valley Doubles the National Average

The average growth for the companies in the Silicon Valley Fast 50 is 7,142
percent, which is more than double that of the national average of 3,554 percent
for all of the Fast 50 programs nationwide. There are 21 Fast 50 programs in the
United States covering most major cities, including New York, Chicago, Los
Angeles, Denver and St. Louis.


Ninety Percent Publicly Held, 4 Percent have Female CEO

Ninety percent (45 companies) of the Fast 50 winners are publicly held, the same
percentage of publicly held companies as in the 1999 ranking. Four percent (two
companies) have a female CEO, also the same figure as the 1999 ranking.


40 Percent of Winners are in the Software Industry

Forty percent (20 companies) of the Fast 50 companies are in the software
industry, compared with 36 percent for the 1999 ranking. The
medical/scientific/technical industry companies account for 14 percent of the
2000 ranking, up from just 4 percent on the 1999 ranking. Biotechnology made a
stronger showing for the 2000 ranking, with 14 percent of the winners in this
industry, compared with 10 percent in 1999.

Communications/networking companies make up 8 percent of the 2000 ranking,
compared with 10 percent in 1999. Computers/peripherals companies total 8
percent of the companies for 2000, the same percentage as in 1999. Internet
companies represent 6 percent of the ranking, down from 8 percent in 1999.

Semiconductor/equipment companies total 6 percent of the winners, down from 18
percent in 2000. Four percent of the winners are in other industries, down from
6 percent in 1999.


Fast 50 Winners' Revenue Tops Out at $790,920,000

Siebel Systems Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., came in with the highest revenue
volume of 1999 at $790,920,000. Siebel Systems ranked number 12 on this year's
list, with phenomenal five-year growth of 9,740 percent.

Forty-Two Percent of Fast 50 Winners are Based in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale

Forty-two percent of the Silicon Valley Fast 50 winners are based in Santa Clara
(22 percent or 11 companies) and Sunnyvale (20 percent or 10 companies).
Fourteen percent are based in San Jose.

The other Fast 50 winners are scattered throughout Silicon Valley, representing
cities including Mountain View (10 percent), Fremont (6 percent), Pleasanton (6
percent), San Mateo (4 percent), Menlo Park (4 percent) and Palo Alto (4
percent). The following cities each are home to 2 percent of the winners:
Cupertino, Foster City, Redwood City and San Carlos.


Five "Rising Stars" Show Fast Growth in Less than Three Years

In addition to the Fast 50 companies, Deloitte & Touche recognized
five "Rising Star" companies, which showed exemplary growth in just
three years. The Rising Star winners for 2000 are:

Number 1 -- Copper Mountain Networks Inc. of Palo Alto with 53,323
percent growth


Number 2 -- Extreme Networks Inc. of Cupertino with 38,191 percent
growth

Number 3 -- Alteon WebSystems Inc. of San Jose with 14,649 percent
growth

Number 4 -- Interwoven Inc. of Sunnyvale with 9,904 percent growth

Number 5 -- Liberate Technologies of San Carlos with 6,196 percent
growth.


Fast 50 Eligibility Requirements

Winners are selected based on the percentage of growth in revenues
from 1995-1999 (five-year period). To be considered for the Fast 50,
entrants must meet the following criteria:

-- Have revenues of at least $50,000 in 1995 and at least $1
million in 1999.

-- Be public or private companies, with headquarters in Silicon
Valley. Subsidiaries and divisions are not eligible, unless
they have some public ownership and are separately traded.

-- Develop proprietary technology that contributes to a
significant portion of the company's operating revenues (for
example, using other companies' technology in a unique way
does not qualify), manufacture a technology-related product
and/or devote a high percentage of effort to research and
development of technology.
