Forum on IMT-2000 standard slated for Oct.4

A committee on the IMT-2000 standard is to hold a public discussion on the
issue Oct.4.

At the first meeting held yesterday morning, the committee agreed to allow the
participants the opportunity for rebuttals, unlike past forums where only
presentations were given.

The committee has asked for the service operators and equipment
manufacturers to submit proposals on issues such as a 3G (third-generation mobile
telecommunication) market forecast, prospects for technology development, royalty
outlook, global roaming possibility, impact on the economy and each side's
preferred standard along with reasons for the preference before the second meeting
slated for next Wednesday.

Third and fourth meetings have been scheduled for Sept.29 and Oct. 6,
respectively. The committee also said it would include two academics from the IT
(information and telecommunications) engineering field and an economics professor.

Meanwhile, the role of the committee is apparently in dispute among some
committee members and the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC),
casting doubt on the committee's ability to come up with a result. While a member
of the committee said that it would be limited to a fact-finding mission, a
high-ranking ministry official suggested that it would play a greater role. "If the
committee is able to reach a compromise, it would be presented to the
Telecommunications Policy Deliberation Committee (TPDC) for review," the official
said.
