Chip equipment shares slammed by Intel, muted growth
NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Shares of leading U.S. chip production equipment makers tumbled by as much as 10 percent in the wake of Intel Corp.'s warning of slower growth and with industry figures showing little improvement in order rates, leading a key analyst to downgrade the entire sector on Friday.

Semiconductor equipment giant Applied Materials was off $5-1/2, or 7 percent, at $68. Novellus Systems (NasdaqNM:NVLS - news) was down nearly 10.14 percent at $52-5/8. Brooks Automation (NasdaqNM:BRKS - news) lost 5.68 percent to $40-1/2, all in trading on the Nasdaq stock market.

SG Cowen analyst Tia-min Pang said he had downgraded the semiconductor equipment industry, cutting his investment ratings on six semiconductor equipment stocks to ``buy'' from ``strong buy.''

The stocks included Applied Materials Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMAT - news), Brooks Automation Inc. (NasdaqNM:BRKS - news), Credence Systems Corp. (NasdaqNM:CMOS - news), Nova Measuring Instruments Ltd. (NasdaqNM:NVMI - news), Photronics Inc. (NasdaqNM:PLAB - news), and PRI Automation Inc. (NasdaqNM:PRIA - news).

The declines came as industry statistics released late on Thursday showed that North American-based makers of semiconductor equipment saw bookings for new orders grow to $3 billion during August, in line with the muted expectations of recent months.
