In point of fact, the price usually does Not skyrocket because of all the upside resistance. When people have been "burned" they are eager to get out when they see some upside movement. They sell quick.... and there are sellers all the way up. That is why chart readers study stocks breaking new high territory. There is no longer upside resistance. On the other hand, a few sellers at this level, without much confidence in future, it is difficult to attract buyers. Hewnce the bigger blip downward.
