scott, RE: Today, why is DELL being hit SO MUCH HARDER than CPQ, GTW, or HWP
A few reasons: First, DELL is the only Intel only shop out there. If the argument that AMD is stealing market share is valid, then it is possible that DELL may be losing by not having an AMD-driven line. Second, DELL management has lost a lot of credibility on Wall Street over the past year (some on this thread would think that this is unwarranted, but it is there nonetheless). This was exacerbated recently by DELL's decision to decrease the amount of disclosure in its earnings reports, inviting people to surmise that they were hiding something. Third, HWP issued a press release today stating that they expected to meet 4Q estimates. CPQ issued a press release that they see European demand as within expectations. There has been no reassuring press release from DELL.
There are probably some other things out there, but that is what I think of off the top of my head.
Also, you are looking at DELL's change from the 4PM close, while both CPQ and HWP are Composite closes that showed trading after Intel's warning. Thus, in spite of what I say above, there isn't nearly as much divergence as you would initially think. |
