I think what you experienced was the ability of the media to put a spin on a political campaign based solely on the political leanings of a comic and a editor. This is common now a days. The media, inherently liberal, has a great deal of power. A few jokes here, a few sensational stories there and the sheeple go right along with it. Basically they just provide "bait" for news anyway.
