<<There wasn't another related area where they could use their gorilla dominance.>>

There is a related area and it is potentially huge. It hasn't been fully defined as a category yet but some are calling it "self-service administrative" applications.

Consider all the administrative procedures (e.g., T&E reports) and policy questions which can be pushed off to the web. Think about all the transactions you can manage around HR processes - enroll/check/change/administer health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, 401(k), ESPP, etc. Imagine all the commerce opportunities created when your marital status changes or babies are added to your family.

Many insurance, health, and financial companies are trying to get into this space and use it to create e-commerce opportunities. Some are trying to use the strategies from LOTFL to turn these tasks into ASP delivered outsourced services - leading to the full outsourcing of the administrative aspects of the HR function. PSFT could be in a position to control the space but they were slow to see the opportunity and, for the most part, have focused their resources on trying to attack new spaces.
