I should think losses are particularly unhealthy for people who are dry cleaning someone else's money. AMZN might have difficulty finding the people who bought their bonds last time around. ;)

Bottom line is , nobody wants to lose money, and the "hot stock" aura that surrounded AMZN when they last visited the Caymans is now badly tarnished.

I'd like to say a few things about Europe being better for AMZN than the US:

1.Lack of sales tax is a huge advantage for AMZN over their B&M competition in the US, and there is no chance that they will get the same treatment in Europe, since taxes are collected by each national government. With this and shipping costs they will be more expensive than the existing bookstores.

2.Internet access in Europe is paid for by the minute, so browsing a web site is more expensive for Europeans than going to a store.

3.Europe lacks a catalog shopping culture.

4.People like their local bookstores, and small shopkeepers have quite a bit of political clout, which they can use to make life difficult for AMZN.

5.People are generally less receptive to new technology than is the case in the US.

Overall I think Europe is more difficult for e-tailers the the US, particularly if the company involved is American.
