Fibonacci Numbers and Phi. Another great area of interest, but first 1/f!

"Noise" comes in many flavors, most commonly grouped as white or pink - there are some other types that are understood to varying degrees. White noise is a hissing sound. It is totally random - flat spectrally. There is another kind of noise known as pink noise, aka, 1/f. It is called 1/f because it gets larger inversely proportional, up to, but not including 0 Hz frequency (an infinite time span). This type of noise is found in rhythmic systems like the activities of people, or animals, brain, weather, stock markets, waves, or carbon resistors that have current flowing through them.

It's origin is unknown in electronics, and relatively poorly studied outside of the field of cognitive science. Most electronic noise is proportional to the temperature of the object. This is thermal noise. It is caused by electrons moving around due to vibration and is well understood. All materials knock of electrons at the 1/f anomalous rate to some degree as well. Some materials more than others. This is not an unusual thing in physics. Many fundamental electromagnetic properties vary tremendously from material to material like refractive index or permitivity. Don't try to magnetize a candle for instance, it won't work. Engineers use metal resistors instead of carbon when 1/f noise is a concern.

Where the "extra" energy comes from (the 1/f is a multiplier of the ENERGY content of the noise)is a mystery that to this date has not been well explained. I have read quite a bit about it and it is very strange. In cognitive theory, there is a prediction that random processes with memory have a 1/f pattern - it has been measured.

It is in the math, and it can be calculated. In a way, like QM, it is a little unsettling. What the memory theory of 1/f supposes is that some processes produce this effect because certain quantum states store information as well as energy. It is incorrect to assume that electron A moving to energy B is enough to describe all energy and information transitions of that state change. This is best illustrated by analogy. If I walk over a path, my use of the path reinforces the path. Future hikers see the path, a memory, and reuse it, not because it is the easiest way to go but because of the trace of my passing. In the electron equivalent, past valence states might be able to affect the probability of future states. In other words, where you have been affects where you are going, if you are an electron.

Here is another example: If you bend a hanger, it will first bend along distortions in the lattice. Subsequent bends form along distortions in the lattice caused by the first bending. This is a primitive form of memory. The future cracks are no longer random, but now occur as a result of a previous process and the probability of a fracture is no longer only related to distortions in the original lattice, but the previous distortions in the lattice caused by manipulation of the lattice.

Similarly, if an event A occurs in the time domain, upstream from B, there is a temporal memory effect that propagates down stream. The longer ago event A was, the more leverage it has on the time axis and the ultimate transition of A to B or C or D or some other state. This is why when f->0 (long time) 1/f goes largely positive. Impossible things can happen if I give it enough time. I could move the Earth if given a shovel and enough time. I have suggested this 1/f implies a temporal causation that lingers. Electrons don't just blindly go from level to level but are inheriting or borrowing some information along the way (energy, if you will) from previous temporal or future quantum states. They have borrowed or spent energy from their future to make the transition in the past, but the debt has to be repaid with interest. This is a form of temporal entanglement.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I've hypothesized that this is the carrier mechanism of animist intelligence. I've thought about experiments to test the theory but they would require large arrays of identical 1/f detectors (a little chip of carbon) connected to a large array processor (like the one used by SETI). If there are communications that cross time-space from ET or God or whatever, this is where I'd look for them. Better than looking at hydrogen lines in deep space. But alas I work at the temple of a large medical company whose interest in carriers of intelligence, are, should I say, tenuous to non-existent. My theories live only here, a few use net posts a few years ago, and in the ears of a few open minded engineers who are willing to humor me. I leave them thinking that I'm a nut, or maybe, just a bit more open to their universe. Obviously in a work situation, I wouldn't discuss this with JUST anyone!!
