Malcolm, (OT) I was a former Member of the Carter Administration- That was a Democratic Administration....

The releases from the SPR will push down prices temporarily (including energy stock prices), but only temporarily. The systemic problems in our energy sector/utility sector will not be solved thereby. But how many tax payer dollars will you pay to replace those same barrels (post-election)...

Don't you find something wrong in using U.S. Treasury Dollars to support the candidacy of any particular candidate?

BTW Beach Bum- The concerted effort to drive oil prices down in the 80's was an intentional combined effort by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia in order to bleed the USSR dry of foreign reserves from oil sales. Our interevention in 1990 in the Gulf War was a partial payback to Saudi Arabia for their assistance in undermining the USSR in the 1980's....And yes the oil industry suffered greatly....
