I didn't say it was grandstanding. Grandstanding is where one takes credit for something he has no or little role in the action. This was a calculated action to try to drive prices down for the election or else Gore would not be out in front. You're going to need more rigs deployed and areas explored, and alternatives funded, but most of all, you need conservation to buy time. Trying to manipulate prices down is not going to help recover domestic production capacity. The auto companies lose money on the fuel efficient cars. Slamming the oil companies is no more going to improve the situation than slamming the HMOs is going to improve health care.
