Compaq Says European Demand Within Expectations

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) said on Friday that its worldwide momentum is ``clearly continuing'' and that European demand is currently tracking within expectations.

The Houston-based computer maker made the statement in response to concerns stirred up after computer-chip giant Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) on Thursday issued a warning for third-quarter revenues and cited weak European PC demand. Intel's forecast shook computer-related sectors while causing its own stock to tumble.

Shares of Compaq fell $1-3/8 to $29-1/2 in late Friday morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites). The stock's 52-week range is between $18-1/4 and $34-13/16.
