My understanding from a buddy who is in the recording industry is that Napster threatens the big record companies more than the bands themselves. The labels worry about losing control of the artists. It seems that only the artists with the huge contracts are really screaming about it...ie Metallica. On the surface my take would be that it would hurt the artists but after listening to his logic my mind was changed to a certain degree. It also sounds as if in the very near future we will be downloading and burning our own cd's and paying the artist directly which scares the hell out of the record companies. Technology is so good today that artists can record in a basement and still walk away with great sound. This will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
