I see the Cree suit against Nichia as one more stepping stone to the announcement of the blue laser. This
product has the potential for a few billion $ in sales/year.
Hunter has said that he won't announce it until it can be
produced in high volume and be sold for $15. The new plant
coming on line in a few months could solve the capacity issue. I believe the real purpose of the lawsuit is to
convince the blue laser customers that Cree really has clear
IP ownership of the technology. Since, it will probably take
a few months for the legal situation to be resolved I doubt
the laser will be announced soon. Hunter projected that the
blue laser will be sold in FY02 and this suit is probably setting the legal groundwork.
