WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Texas Gov. George W. Bush has regained lost ground in the presidential contest,
although he still trails Vice President Al Gore in Saturday's CNN/USA Today/Gallup tracking poll.

In a poll of 661 likely voters conducted September 20-22, Gore stood at 48 percent and Bush, 45 percent.
That puts the race almost precisely where it was after Labor Day when the tracking poll began -- with
Gore's 47 percent to Bush's 44 percent.

Bush's showing is his best in two weeks; Gore's support has returned to the high-40s after spending two
days over the 50 percent mark.

It's not yet clear whether these changes are because of permanent shifts in the voting public or the kind of
fluctuations of tracking polls. So it is still wise to look at the big picture: Gore's support remaining in the
high 40s, a few points ahead of Bush, as he has been since the fall campaign began.

It's also too early to tell whether Gore's support for releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has
hurt his standing with the public; the answer to that question won't come until Monday's tracking poll results
are released.
