Being a fellow software engineer, you'll understand this: I am a slow, single processor working in a round robin algorithm, and I have a lot of starving processes. :-) Right now, my 2 top priorities are the back testing software and studying MAX charts so I can pick up my trading a bit more (after God, family, country, and all that other good stuff of course!)
I watched 3pb charts for about 2 weeks, enough to remain interested but not enough to trade them yet. I really like them when I'm disciplined enough to not watch the price tick by tick. I do still watch them along with my MAX basket and charts, but I haven't papertraded them in a few weeks. Indeed, the RavenQuote quote sheet plugins make 3pb scanning easier, though I still prefer to see the chart.
For more 3pb information: go see equis.com. Nison's 2nd candle patterns book and UndergroundTraders.com latest book also have good descriptions. (The UT.com book is too much if you're just interested in 3pb, but it does have some good techniques for scalping which I use for entry and exit on MAX signals. Those methods involve watching stochastics on both the stock and futures on 1m and 3m time periods.)
