( BW)(ENTRUST)(ENTU) Global Trust Authority Selects Interpay and Entrust Technologies to Power its Secure e-Commerce Infrastructure Business Editors BRUSSELS, Belgium & UTRECHT, The Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Sept. 25, 2000--(NASDAQ:ENTU) More than 800 Member Banks World-wide To Benefit From Secure e-Business Transactions The Global Trust Authority (GTA) announced today that it has selected Interpay, the Dutch interbanking processor, to operate the root key of its financial services trust infrastructure to enable secure electronic communications and transactions on a world-wide scale. Interpay will use Entrust Technologies' (Nasdaq: ENTU) public-key infrastructure (PKI) solutions as the proven technology foundation for this comprehensive system.
Based in Belgium, the GTA represents over 800 banks world-wide and will allow consumers and organizations to transact in confidence with traders in another country through a trusted e-business system that provides reliable online identification and authorization of participating parties for transactions in the Business-to-Consumer, Business-to-Business and Business-to-Administration arenas.
The GTA root key enables the establishment of a network of GTA PKIs which allow GTA's member financial institutions to more securely conduct business transactions.
The GTA selected Interpay as its root key operator because of Interpay's extensive experience with implementing PKI projects. Interpay was started in 1995 with the implementation of a PKI solution for secure Internet payments, and is currently operating three Certification Authorities (CAs) using Entrust's technology. Interpay will use the Entrust/PKI(TM) software solution to operate the GTA CA, relying on systems integration support of SIA Benelux.
"This announcement marks a significant step forward in the evolution of the GTA," said John Tunstall, Managing Director ofthe GTA. "The creation of the GTA root key will open the door for the introduction of applications by the GTA members that will provide a trusted service to the market in compliance with the European Directive on electronic signature." Ben Haasdijk, Executive Vice President of Interpay, says: "We are proud GTA has selected Interpay as the Root Key Processor, for we fully support the importance of secure communication via the Internet in respect of the growing demand in both the business and consumer environment. Interpay has a broad and proven track record in this field." "The GTA network leverages financial institutions' historic role as trusted third parties to enable trusted validation of on-line identities, and secure e-business transactions," said Arthur Coleman, vice-president, Industries, Entrust Technologies Inc. "Entrust's proven experience in providing solutions for financial services brings a solid technical foundation to this global project, and positions Entrust well for continued growth in a key vertical market." Among the founding members of GTA are financial institutions from Spain, France, The Netherlands, Belgium and Portugal. The founding members represent in excess of 800 banks.
GTA will satisfy the market requirements for medium to small size companies, national or supra-national organisations, Government administrations and individuals as they seek to transact with confidence in a cross border environment by means of insecure networks, such as Internet, using access instruments such as smart cards with GSM and WAP.
GTA will provide a world-wide trusted Infrastructure, that can be used by all sectors, to conduct cross border or national e-commerce. This is realised by taking the lead in providing five pillars of stability, namely integrity, security, liability acceptance, interoperability by the use of standards and trust.
GTA enables participating trading parties to establish a trusted electronic trading relationship. The means for this is the provision of an environment, whereby transacting parties have confidence, that each party can be authenticated, irrespective of the transaction mechanism being used, and that GTA will arbitrate in between conflicting parties if a loss arises.
