JDN, "Intel is struggling" but not for any of the reasons given by the nonsense in the Redherring article.

Intel is always struggling. It is part of their screwy culture. They didn't have to guide analysts to a blowout 3Q. They could have guided analysts to a lower revised 3Q that any normally intelligent human beings would have done, but Intel didn't.

They will probably come in 2 cents below revised estimates along with a host of explanations about investment income and other one time investment expenses that will further enhance the careers of the light weight Joe Osha and the Intel envious Drew Peck.

Intel is a $33B company that has gross margins over 60%. They spend more money on R&D than their nearest competitor has in gross income. Heck, their investment income from cash on hand could rival AMD's gross income (gggg).

In a screwy way their bizarre behavior inadvertantly keep their stock historically from getting too far ahead of itself in valuation.

This screwy culture is Andy Grove's legacy.

Craig Barrett has his work cut out for himself to work around this nuttiness and leave his own legacy. Craig Barrett, however, is in his own way a driven person and most importantly for us investors is that he is a proven winner. There is nothing in his personality that suggests that he could lose in anything that he sets his sights on.
