In a series of PMs this weekend, TMH proposed four distinct markets for digital photography: 1) the snapshot crowd -- low volume, not very demanding 2) the enthusiast -- moderate to high volume, fairly picky 3) the pro -- very high volume, extremely picky 4) the specialist -- pro or semi-pro applications with special requirements such as electronic publication for which the picky aspects don't matter. Might be a worthwhile effort to refine these categories a bit and then assess the ability of current and potential storage techniques to meet these requirements. Beyond confirming where flash can meet storage capacity requirements the piece I grapple with is identifying what mainstream applications require/benefit from removable memory in a standard form factor which is a key and differentiating flash attribute. Clearly, carrying around music, pictures, and presentations so they can be shared using many different devices is part of the allure of flash. I have to think there is a killer application here somewhere - perhaps with a secure digital twist which can guarantee revenue streams for the person carrying the card.
