JC - re: 12 way - I believe that HP, CPQ and Unisys will all be showing 32 way systems with the new datacenter Win2K - at least, that's what a TechWeb article said last night. The Unisys product has been announced for a while. The claim that Sun's new box will run a thousand processors is just silly - I refer you to my post on that topic on the SUNW thread. Just because there is an architectural possibility to address that many doesn't mean that all of the other system components are there - CPQ's wildfire architecture can accommodate 4096 processors, but I'm not expecting a product announcement for a box of that size any time soon. If Sun gets to 128P with any kind of scalability, that will be impressive. And remember that with current technology, a 64 way E10000 is roughly equivalent to a 24 way IBM S80 - where will a 32 way XEON box hit? And when will Sun have those new architecture big boxes? Current opinion leans towards summer of 2001. Maybe by that time Sun will need 1000 processors to match raw performance of Intel based products.
