Alighieri Re...I was referring to the perceived futility of the actions from an economic point of view. There is, by the way, a chance that I am wrong about this. <<<

Not only are these actions futile in the long run, I believe they are harmful. Not because it won't lower prices temporarily, not because the oil can't be replaced, but because of the bad messages it sends out. It sends out the message that Al will undercut the drillers who have for the first time in yrs. started to receive enough money to make it worthwhile. How much new oil will we find with all of the rigs in mothballs. Will the investors keep on funding fuel cells if they believe Al will undercut them at the drop of a vote. As long as I have known him, he has said he was for environmentalism, but now he does the exact opposite by pushing fuel use rather then conservation. Thats the problem, for a few votes, Al compromised the environmental movement he claims to champion. It also must have backfired, as GW now has a slim lead in the polls.

On your political stand, this administration has to be the most investigated in history.

There is a good reason for that, Bill is probably the crookedest president in history as well as the slickest. They don't call him slick Willy for nothing.

While I don't condone such weakness and stupidity, I also choose to be grateful to this administration for 8 years of unprecedented prosperity, unabated economic expansion, the lowest unemployment in history, and very low inflation. Why anyone would mess with success is, quite frankly, beyond my (non partisan) comprehension.

Just because Al told you he was responsible for the economic sucess the country has enjoyed the last 8 yrs; just as he told us he invented the internet, just as he claimed to be an environmentalist while promoting gas usage; just as he claims to be against big oil,(Big oil constitute the majority of stocks in the trust overseen by Al); just as Al condemns Hollywood, while grabbing all of the money he can from them,I wouldn't believe him on this one either.
GW of course does the same thing, he just doesn't seem to be as open about it.
