I heard an interesting story about the Dodo Bird. It seems that some biologists noticed that there were no young specimens of a particular tree which shared the environs of the DoDo bird. Then they noticed that the youngest specimen they could found was not germinated any later than the time of the disappearance of the Dodo.

The examined the seeds of the tree and postulated that the Dodo's ate the seeds and digested (in the gizzard) the hard shell of the seed, allowing it to germinate. Without that treatment, the seed would not germinate.

To test their theory, they fed seeds to turkeys. Sure enough, after digestion by the turkeys, the seed would germinate.

True story.

But the moral is more interesting:

It takes a turkey to replace a dodo.
