CalPERS California Biotechnology Program CalPERS has established a $500 million biotechnology investment program to invest with many of the world’s leading biotechnology companies and experts that make California their home. The System believes that the biotechnology industry is poised for tremendous growth in the next 5-20 years. CalPERS’ ability to invest significant capital over long-term periods can help the System become an investor of choice, gaining access to the very best companies, experts, and talent in the biotechnology industry. CalPERS may invest in existing biotechnology funds or create strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and work with leading universities, public and private labs to incubate new businesses emerging from research and development. CalPERS intends to conduct a search for an investment partner to assist in the development and management of the program in the next few months. A final business plan for the program will be presented to the CalPERS Investment Committee in October 2000.
