Alcatel 7410 Broadband Access Server Now Supports LMDS Broadband Wireless
Alcatel Enhances Business to Business Broadband Access Options
PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 2000--Alcatel (Paris:CGEP.PA) (NYSE:ALA - news) today announced that it has extended the functionality of its 7410 BAS (Broadband Access Server) to include broadband wireless access alongside its wire-line capability. The 7410 BAS now has the ability to aggregate and terminate traffic from an LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution System) network.
Alcatel is the fastest-growing provider of broadband access server systems and the world's leading provider of LMDS equipment. It is the only manufacturer currently supplying the combination of these two platforms as a complete, fully deliverable, managed end-to-end solution.
The 7410 BAS enables residential and corporate broadband service providers to offer high value-added IP services through the establishment of customized IP VPN and portal-based services. The 7410 BAS now offers cost-effective carrier-scale DSL and LMDS termination and - through advanced routing and traffic management - a gateway to selected ISPs and application service providers. It also enables private VPN connectivity and the advanced management suite makes the 7410 BAS an ideal solution for retail and wholesale services.
Until now, the 7410 supported those services over DSL, cable modems, leased line and dial-up networks. The addition of LMDS - the standards based, high frequency broadband wireless service - allows service providers to extend services to regions where there is no access to an appropriate wire-line infrastructure. This increases the reach of services provided to existing customers, and offers the opportunity to open up new markets.
Nico Vernieuwe, executive vice president of managed IP solutions for Alcatel's carrier internetworking division said: ``The addition of LMDS broadband support to the capabilities of our 7410 BAS is the culmination of a major development programme and gives Alcatel a world lead in the provision of integrated broadband solutions. The 7410 BAS reduces infrastructure costs by supporting multiple applications such as dial-up termination, DSL subscriber management, LMDS support, VOIP trunking, and PSTN-data offload in a common platform.''
About the Alcatel 7410 BAS
The Alcatel 7410 Broadband Access Server, located in a service provider's network, aggregates traffic from multiple DSLAMs (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers). Its growing popularity among operators is due to its function-rich design, ease of provisioning and lower infrastructure costs. The most scalable product available on the market, the 7410 BAS supports tens of thousands of concurrent users of DSL services, combining broadband applications, modem traffic, VoIP - and now LMDS traffic - in a single device.
About the Alcatel LMDS solution
The Alcatel LMDS solution is a multiservice broadband wireless network comprising a Digital Base Station (DBS), Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) and Network & Service Management. The Alcatel LMDS portfolio of products and supporting services will reduce the total cost of ownership through integrated wireless/wireline network service management and zero-touch provisioning. It also provides greater flexibility including choice of centralised or distributed architecture, matching capacity and service requirements of individual cells within the service provider's coverage area.
This platform not only supports multiple frequencies to address the global variances in licensing but also increased network capacity with dynamic bandwidth allocation, sharing bandwidth among multiple users dynamically and enabling over-subscription.
The portfolio is supported by global performance in the rapid delivery of high-quality, end-to-end solutions, including turnkey packages, backed by an unmatched combination of local presence and global reach.
