Informix Endorses Insignia Solutions!!! Half way down article today!!! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Tuesday September 26, 6:33 am Eastern Time Press Release New Release of Insignia's Jeode Application Environment Raises Java Application Performance Bar Accelerated Java Technology-Compatible Virtual Machine Solution Now Supports PersonalJava 1.2 With Enhanced Security SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 2000-- Insignia Solutions® (Nasdaq:INSGY - news), a leading provider of accelerated Java(TM) solutions for Internet appliances and embedded devices, unveiled a new release of its Jeode(TM) Application Environment that raises the Java application and applet performance bar for virtual machine technology. In addition to key performance gains, version 1.7 of the Jeode Application Environment also supports the latest release of the PersonalJava(TM) specification, which provides Java 2 platform security. The new release also provides increased robustness and new advanced deployment technology that reduces the use of constrained static and dynamic memory. The company is showing Jeode technology at booth number 2412 during the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose this week.
The new release leverages JeodeSlingShot(TM) dynamic compilation technology to boost performance over previous company releases. For example, in internal benchmark tests conducted using the industry-standard Embedded CaffeineMark(TM) test suite, the overall performance of the Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine(TM) (EVM(TM)) increased 53.4 percent. Jeode EVM performance improved in all the tests in this particular benchmark with some tests showing more than a 200 percent performance increase. In the popular Volano benchmark test, performance more than doubled. Virtual machine performance for the Embedded CaffeineMark and Volano benchmarks was tested using a NEC MobilePro 800, which is powered by the Microsoft Windows(TM) CE embedded operating system, version 2.11, and a MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:MIPS - news) 133 MHz. processor. During the benchmark tests, the Jeode EVM used 2 MB of RAM.
With this latest release, Insignia has also incorporated improvements to make browsing the Web and accessing different pages even faster and smoother than before.
PersonalJava 1.2 Compatibility
Version 1.7 is now compatible with PersonalJava 1.2, which is the latest specification for network-connectable consumer devices. Key to this upgrade is support for the Java 2 platform security model.
Jeode technology will continue to support for customers building Internet appliances and embedded devices based on the PersonalJava 1.1.3 and EmbeddedJava(TM) 1.0.3 specifications.
Advanced Deployment Technology
New advanced deployment technology in this release provides important RAM and ROM savings. For example, customers can deploy Jeode technology in ROM, which provides costs savings and is well-suited for set-top box and embedded device designs. In addition, improvements in the integral class database and file system support also contribute to reduced memory use.
Increased Robustness
To give users greater insight into the inner workings of the Jeode Application Environment and how it is using resources, version 1.7 offers additional resource tracking facilities including:
Instrumentation of resource usage to obtain a picture of the total resource requirements of the Jeode EVM, as well as usage patterns A new trace facility that captures all resource allocations and de-allocations for offline analysis, such as the study of resource lifetimes Additional Support
Independent of the 1.7 product release and in addition to previous operating system/processor support, Insignia now offers support for the following:
Windows CE 3.0 and Red Hat Linux 6.2 operating systems on the target device Internet Explorer 4.01 and 5.0 browser plug-ins Windows 2000 operating system as host for application development A full PersonalJava implementation, including AWT graphical user interface support, for Hitachi SH4 processors
