[MSFT/GTE]
<<<any other intersting tidbits from the MSFT trial?>>>
A big focus in advanced trials will be multi-casting. Video-stream from MSFT --- not sure if this means MSN, but assume it does.
I asked if GTE's rollout would be co-ordinated with Win'98 and my guide said no. "We'll be selling to all users. . . won't focus on any one. . . " I also asked where NT's routing function fit with ADSL and was told it didn't. "NT can ride over ADSL. . . . [it's] the transport."
Of course, I'm delighted Craig Mundie, MSFT Sr. VP and media spokesperson for high-speed trials, has Amati's equipment in his home. Oh, one other tidbit. BCTelecom in Canada, 51% owned by GTE, is testing Amati's technology with rave reviews according to my guide. Incidentally, the person I refer to as my guide is the administrative director of the trials and because she's been innundated with calls from being quoted in Seattle press, I've decided to keep her name out of these posts. All she needs is a couple hundred phone messages and emails from people wanting further comments. She's the one who told me they'd be choosing a vendor this week, but I've since heard from Bill Kula who said they wouldn't --- or at least not that he'd been told. I suspect there's a difference between being told who the vendors are and having it made public.
Towards the end of my time there (over 2 hours), she said the technology has developed by leaps and bounds in just the year they've been testing. Part of this is hardware --- note Amati's progress -- but much is software --- MSFT's applications like NetMeeting, NetShow, and so on. Where will we be next year at this time?
I don't know what's making the stock move this morning. But, hey, I'm not complaining.
Cheers!
